Initial Salary Placement will be between Step 1 ($64,562) and Step 3 ($68,491) based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement.

Portland Community College (PCC) is seeking two full-time instructors of Spanish language and culture, one to be based at the Southeast Campus and the second at Sylvania Campus. The Spanish Program is part of our World Languages Department within the Arts, Humanities, Communication, and Design (AHCD) Pathway at PCC. The Spanish Program is committed to providing students an immersive language learning experience aimed at expanding their cultural understanding and giving them the tools to actively apply Spanish language skills in the community. The Spanish program welcomes students from diverse backgrounds and abilities to study and develop their skills in preparation for a variety of careers and/or transfer to four-year institutions. This position requires knowledge of foundational approaches to teaching communicative language courses in immersion from the first day. Spanish faculty at PCC are committed to developing professionally and contributing to the continuous improvement of the Spanish program and the college community. This includes staying abreast of innovations in language teaching and applying this expertise to the improvement of existing courses, creating new courses, and ensuring the program aligns with college curricular standards and practices.

  • Adapts practices to include a wide range of cultural knowledge, experiences, and perspectives, especially from historically untapped communities.
  • Responds to cultural shifts and changing community support needs through ongoing interrogation of pedagogy and teaching practices.
  • Demonstrated ability using student-centered methods to teach face-to-face and in multiple modalities (in-person, hybrid, remote - Types of classes at PCC).
  • Commitment to teaching communicative language courses in immersion from the first day, per ACTFL’s Guiding Principles.
  • Commitment to language advising and mentoring of students in an effort to improve student success.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, teach, and assess learners from diverse backgrounds in courses on beginning and intermediate Spanish language.
  • Interest in and openness to teaching culture courses (SPA 260A, SPA 265A) and/or Spanish for Heritage Speakers.
  • Candidates should have native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English.
  • Demonstrates commitment to developing professionally and contributing to the continuous improvement of the Spanish program and service to the college.

Instructor Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Spanish or a related field (e.g., education, linguistics, humanities)*
  • Evidence of Spanish proficiency (native or near-native ability
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and proven experience with teaching language and assessing learners according to current methodology and best practices
  • Demonstrated intercultural competence

*This list may not be all-encompassing as there are other degree titles that may be appropriate for the subject and related areas. The Program Dean in consultation with the Faculty Department Chair will make a recommendation about the applicability of a particular degree that is outside the scope of this list.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching adult learners
  • Evidence of ability to teach culture
  • Successfully completed a college-level course on second language teaching methodology and teaching for communicative proficiency
