The Department of Languages and Cultures at California Lutheran University (Cal Lutheran) seeks to hire at the assistant level for a tenure track position starting in the Fall of 2020.
A full-teaching load is usually three courses per academic semester and six per academic year. Primary teaching responsibilities may include courses ranging from language instruction to specialized content, for example: Elementary and Intermediate Spanish, Conversation and Composition, literature and society surveys of Latin America and Spain, Spanish for the Health Professions, Business Spanish, Introduction to Translation, Women Writers in Hispanic Literature, Film in Spanish, Race and Ethnicity in Latin America, Spanish-Language Media and Production in the United States, and Contemporary Chicano Literature. Additionally, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop new courses in their area of expertise, which could include study abroad and travel seminar experiences.
It is essential that candidates possess the ability or potential to teach, advise, and mentor undergraduate students, particularly those from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds. Applicants with demonstrated ability to attract students to Spanish courses from the areas of business, education, communication, psychology, and STEM are strongly encouraged to apply.
Eligible applicants will have a Ph.D. in Spanish or related field officially conferred by an accredited degree-granting university. The application must be written (or translated) in English. ABDs will be considered for appointment at the instructor level with degree to be conferred by Fall 2020.
Successful candidates will be a generalist with recent experience in, and current knowledge about, one or more of the following areas: Spanish-language media, Spanish for the professions, and Latinx/Chicano literature and culture. Successful candidates will be committed to teaching, research, and service at a liberal arts university that is a Hispanic Serving and McNair institution. They will also provide evidence of excellence in teaching and advising and evidence of a strong commitment to developing a research program involving undergraduate students.
