The 8th National Symposium of Spanish as a Heritage Language (NSSHL) will be hosted by the Institute for Language Education in Transcultural Context (ILETC) and the Graduate Center, City University of New York, on Thursday, May 13th and Friday, May 14th, 2021, with a workshop on Saturday, May 15th. This year, the symposium will be held virtually through live invited panels and pre-recorded presentations, allowing for both synchronous and asynchronous participation.
Accepted presentations will be delivered via pre-recorded PowerPoints, 8-12 minutes long, with ongoing asynchronous Q&A. Presenters must be able to record their own narrated presentations that will be uploaded (by ILETC) onto a video-streaming service for viewing by conference attendees only.
Presenters must also be prepared to engage in asynchronous discussion on their presentations via designated forums. Detailed instructions on how to create the narrated PowerPoint videos and how to participate in discussions will be sent to accepted presenters.
Proposals, in Spanish or English, should include:
1. An anonymized abstract containing the presentation’s title (300 words maximum excluding references, tables, figures, and title).
2. A description of your paper for the symposium program, which provides an accurate, clear, and concise description of what will be presented (80 words maximum). This description does not need to be anonymized.
Both the proposal and the program description should be in final, publishable form and free from spelling and grammar errors (we reserve the right to edit them, if necessary). Only Word documents
(.doc, .docx) will be accepted.
Submit abstracts and program descriptions by 11:59 PM EST on Sunday, January 31st, 2021, here. Authors will be notified of acceptance by Thursday, February 18th, 2021.
